Module 3: Preliminary Theories
"We are all here on earth to help others. What I can't figure out is what the others are here for." --W. H. Auden
It has been said that it is better to give than to receive. While many of us are willing to help others, there are those who don't believe that it is their social responsibility.
As an individual, we have obligations to act to help the entire society where we belong. We have duties to do which is to help one another. If generosity is in everyone's heart, there will be no needy, no poor and everyone will be happy.
The reasons why we have to help one another can be summarized in Anne Frank's quote: "How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world".
Ethical egoists think that people will be happiest if they look out for themselves and not concern themselves with others but is this where true human happiness lies?
People who disregard the interests of others are not as happy as people who maintain social relationships. We can only find true human happiness if we give meaning to our life by thinking of the interests of others.
What are the roots of egoism? Where does it come from? What do egotistical people fear?
Pride is the overall root of egoism. We can hide pride but it's always manifests egoist acts.
The only thing that egoist are afraid of is the death of their ego. They are afraid of losing their personal worth.
